History of Tea

Korea

Tea drinking is recorded in early Korean histories as being preferred by royalty and as a tool in ceremonial offerings.  Royalty supported the use of tea to cleanse the mind, while also advocating a health affect.  Tea from the Tang Dynasty of China is believed to have been brought to China from Korean royalty. Artist used poetry to express the nature of tea during the Koryo Dynasty.  As in Japan, the tea ceremony and nature of tea itself was heavily tied to Buddhism.  During the history of Korea, there was a movement to replace Buddhism with the beliefs of Confucius.  This movement was active during the Josun Dynasty (1392~1910).  During this movement, temples were destroyed and the drinking of tea fell victim to force.  Korean history is one of transition.  Surrounded by countries such as China and Japan, Korea was often a target of invasion.  The traditional way of tea came to a virtual standstill.  However, during the 1800's the way of tea began to be rediscovered.  Even today, the way of tea is being revived and it benefits are being spread throughout the world.
