History of Tea

Europe

The Portuguese were first to establish trade with China.  The route that the Portuguese established brought the tea back to the home port in Lisbon.  From there, the Dutch helped transport it to other countries such as France, Holland and others.  Before this time, the knowledge of tea was just information passed by leaders who traveled the East in caravans.  The Dutch capital of Hague became a popular spot for tea.  During these time, Europeans were interested in things from the East and this helped spread tea further throughout Europe.

Tea was being served in restaurants, and tea gardens were becoming popular.  The benefits of tea were being studied and debated by scholars.  Tea became a product associated with the wealthy and royalty, however, the benefits were soon available to all parties.  Tea continues to be a big part of everyday life in Europe and continues to spread.
